Home & Family>>That's What It's All About!  Last month my Mother turned the ripe "young" age of 80.  In preparation of the upcoming event my siblings and I began to plan a Family reunion to commemorate and celebrate the event.  With me being the only local sibling, a sister in Texas, a brother in Oregon and another sister in New York, the planning was to say the least, a challenge.  But through e-mails, instant messaging and of course telephone calls, we pulled together an event that was a true once in a lifetime Family get together.

Growing up in the now-popular town of River Vale, NJ didn't seem to be anything out of the ordinary to us back when we were kids.  We lived in what we thought was a humble Cape Cod style home on a quiet street.  In the days when we were kids, there were no cell phones, computers and most of our friend's parents drove station wagons - not SUV's.  It was a much simpler time and yet now looking back, we seemed to have it all. 

Our mother was a depression era child growing up in Manhattan.  She was from a small broken family - just her and one younger sister but her single mother made sure they always had the necessities and the most important necessity of all was Home & Family. 

As a child my grandmother lived with us and our family gathered for every possible event.  Whether it be a Birthday, Holiday, Wedding, Birth, you name it!  Maybe it was because she was the older sibling but our house was the most popular gathering place of all.  My Mother was like a master of ceremonies for each Home & Family event.  Our little house was always a buzz of commotion. This is what a normal family function looked like back then.  Sadly some of these family members are no longer with us.  But this old black and white photo was one sample of our regular family gatherings. That's Mom in the bottom left corner of seated adults.

Nobody cared that we didn't have a plasma T.V. in every room or a computer and cell phone.  We had a Home & Family and it kept us all going.  Ah yes, the good old days!  Just look at those smiling faces!

So when my siblings and I sought out to plan the Home & Family event as a gift to our Mother we dug deep into our childhood memories and invited every relative we could think of.  As the r.s.v.p's started to stack up we were shocked that we had put together a list of over 70 guests.  Our Mother just didn't believe it was true.  But then the big day came and as my sisters, brother and I, together with our own families, prepared the food, tent, tables & chairs the party began to take on a life of it's own.

Our Mother just kept saying, "I don't believe all these people are coming for my Birthday"!  But the relatives came from Florida, Oregon, Texas, Connecticut, New York City, Chicago and this is what it looked like when the big day came.  We weren't able to get everyone that was in attendance into this one group photo but you get the picture.  Is it possible that Home & Family is important to so many?

Happy 80th Birthday Mom!  It was a wonderful party and although the World is moving at a much faster pace today the one thing you taught us that still holds true - Home & Family - That's what it's all about!

Before the Summer's end, why not try holding your own Home & Family event.  You may be surprised at how many others will happily attend. That is what it's all about!
